Clip Notes: Charlotte FC Comeback Falls Short in Chicago

Charlotte showed fight, but it was too little, too late in Chicago.

After going down three by halftime, Charlotte bounced back in the second half to make it 3-2 in the 59th minute. It was game on from there, and The Crown scrapped to find the equalizer. There were chances, but nothing fell for Charlotte, and the night ended in disappointment, marking the third straight loss for the black and blue.

Chicago's goals came fast and furious in the first half—three in 10 minutes: a defensive lapse, a deflection, and a mistaken pass. The goals felt all too familiar to the recent form and put Charlotte in a significant hole by the 33rd minute.

Dean Smith took off Liel Abada at halftime and brought on Djibril Diani, which pushed Pep Biel out wide and opened the attack for The Crown. Diani was a spark, connecting passes and finding Wilfried Zaha down the wing. The first goal started with precisely that. Zaha then pinged a ball into Pep Biel, who slotted it into the bottom left corner. This was Pep's sixth goal of the year and Zaha's fifth assist.

Goal number two started with Diani as well. He made a darting run into the attack and found Pep, who sent an immediate through ball to Idan Toklomati at the top of the 18. Toklomati then carried his run into the box and slotted it home—his second consecutive match with a goal.

Once the match turned 3-2, Chicago buttoned it up and pinched in. There was little room for Charlotte to continue their momentum from the two goals.

Charlotte will finally return home after a month on the road. They face Orlando City on July 5th, but will be without Wilfried Zaha, who picked up a yellow card in this match and is suspended due to accumulation. Three of the next four matches will be at home for Charlotte FC.
