In a persistent downpour with wind blowing sideways for most of the match, Charlotte FC earned an important three points on the road against CF Montréal.
Striker Archie Goodwin left the game in the first half after coming up shaken up following a challenge.
Montréal seized the lead in the 34th minute off a header effort from Daniel Ríos.
Charlotte then responded in quick succession with a rapid, brilliant goal on the counterattack.
Pep Biel initiated the sequence and delivered a brilliant ball to Allan Saint-Maximin. Maxi then flashed his signature dribbling ability and serviced a neat pass to winger Liel Abada. Abada made the most of the opportunity and buried the shot in the top right corner to level the affairs.
Biel earned a secondary assist on the sequence, which made him the 22nd player of all time to record back-to-back 10G/10A seasons. Additionally, Biel has now tied Karol Świderski for most goal contributions in club history.
The first half ended deadlocked at 1-1.
In the second half, defender David Schnegg received a booking, which will cause him to miss Charlotte’s next game.
Idan Toklomati put the visitors in front for good in the 81st minute with a neat, calm tap-in finish off a nifty pass by Schnegg.
Montréal had a serious chance deep into stoppage time, but a header attempt didn’t have the accuracy.
All told, it was a gritty and deserved win for Dean Smith’s side in less than ideal conditions.
Charlotte’s road trip continues this weekend as The Crown heads to Ohio to face FC Cincinnati. The reverse fixture from earlier this season produced a thrilling 2-2 draw at Bank of America Stadium.
