Charlotte FC earned a second-straight Leagues Cup victory with a 2-0 win over Atlas F.C. Friday night at Bank of America Stadium. It extended The Crown’s home unbeaten streak to five.
Atlas netted what looked like the game’s first goal in the 15th minute off a left-footed strike from José MartÃn. However, the goal was disallowed for offside, which kept it a scoreless affair.
A brilliant one-hand save by Tyler Miller late into stoppage time denied the visitors an opportunity to take the lead before half-time.
Liel Abada broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. Tyger Smalls initiated the sequence and delivered a precise pass to Abada, who neatly slotted it home to give Charlotte the lead.
Stoppage time produced moments of drama, as an Atlas attempt very narrowly went wide of the net.
But then, in the last minute of added time, Tyger Smalls added a second goal that took advantage of an empty net and emphatically shut the door on any comeback attempt.
The group stage of Leagues Cup action concludes Tuesday for Charlotte FC as The Crown hosts Pachuca. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30pm EST.
